What is Wearable Technology?
Wearable technology is a lot more inclusive than a few watches, it's even expanded into athletic socks and other sportswear. Most of it is used to monitor your health while some are just made for entertainment.
Some clothes have technology embedded into the fabric of the clothes. Meanwhile, most of the tech is just a sensor that can be placed on any type of clothing.
Both count as wearable technology and are slowly changing how we monitor our bodies. Before this, we had to go to the doctor, but now some sensors are even monitoring our emotional needs.
The advancement in technology alone has rapidly improved. Smart clothes are no exception as more and more are getting made.
The Most Inventive Smart Clothing
These jackets made a grand appearance at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics. They were made by Ralph Lauren and given to Team USA to use as they please.
They're not the only ones making them though. Canada goose, Ravean, Dewalt, and many more companies are making their own versions of the jacket.
Most are battery powered and used by people who either hunt or participate in winter sports. If you live somewhere freezing, you might want to invest in one.
Jackets That Control Phones
Another interesting jacket has been made by Levi Strauss and Google. The jacket has senors on the sleeve so you can control your phone with a few hand movements.
Samsung also seems to be ahead of the game and recently made a line of smart clothes. They made a suit that can unlock your phone and exchange contact information with others.
They also made a polo shirt that does all that and checks the weather outside. Both of these garments are huge leaps towards this becoming the new normal.
New Advances In Technological Clothes
OMSignal's clothes not only monitor your workout and body but it also watches your emotional side. It registers signs of tensing, heart rate increase, and any changes in breathing.
If it thinks something is wrong you it will notify you to stop and take a breath. It watches your workout as well as manages your mental health.
Companies like Spire, MyFeel and others are creating devices and clothes that monitor your mental health. Your mind and body are connected, and these garments can help manage both.
Tommy Hilfiger Is The Future Of Smart Fashion
The latest of Tommy Hilfiger is a new brand called Xplore. They just released a variety clothes along with an app to track when you wear them.
The line now has 23 items from hats to shirts to jeans. The more you wear them the more points you rack up. if you wear them enough you can get exclusive deals and offers through the app.
Accessories Apart Of The Smart Clothing Movement
Jackets, shirts, and pants are great, but it's the little things that can create big changes. Even if they're a pair of athletic socks or a visor, they can do the same things,
Athletic Socks Are Gaining Ground
Medical and Athletic Socks seem to be a popular item for many companies. Owlet, Sensoria, and Siren are a few companies that have created technology-infused athletic socks.
Owlet socks are made for infants so parents can monitor their child's breathing and heart rate. Parents can now monitor how their baby is doing when it's sick or asleep.
Sensoria is another sock company that makes athletic socks so runners can check how long and how far they're ran. They can even track what your running style is and how to improve it.
SoPhy Cushion Socks and Siren's Diabetic Socks are two companies that produce socks for medical purposes. These socks can track how a person walks, their heart rate, and if they're temperature rises.
All of these running socks have unique attributes that help people in a different ways. It doesn't matter where you wear them as long as they help you monitor your health.
Bags Are Great Accessories
The Everpurse is a charging machine and carrier for your phone. This purse is another great accessory that can be a useful addition to your wardrobe.
The VanDerWaals handbag is a color-changing purse that you can control with your phone. The lights can sync up to a song and also flash when you're phone is ringing. It's pretty nifty to use.
The most inclusive bag is the HiSmart bag by Lepow. It can track and charge your phone as well as control it through Bluetooth.
Technology That's Also Coming Up
The AIO smart sleeve is a compression sleeve that monitors a person's heartbeat. It can help those with an injury focus on what they can handle and not overexerting themselves.
Hats have also been gaining ground in the technology industry. The Smartcap measures fatigue levels so you know when to cool down and relax.
There is also the Neopenda baby hat which shows the babies temperature, heart rate, and breathing rate. You won't have to worry about your little one if you have this hat.
The Largest Wearable Tech Companies
Google and Samsung Are A Domineering Force
Samsung and Google are already the top companies when it comes to technology, plus they're both branching out into the clothing department.
Each has a lineup of interesting and innovative clothes that have some form of technology wired in them. Samsung has a suit, pants, shirt, belt, and bag in their line of technological clothes.
The shirt and pants measure your bodies heart rate and even body fat levels. The suit connects to a phone and can be used as one.
Meanwhile, the bag is a phone charger with solar panels on the side to keep itself charged. Then the last is my personal favorite, which is a belt that adjusts itself to your meals. If you eat too much it gives you some room.
Google, on the other hand, is making their clothes with a phone in mind. Project Jacquard makes tech that can help you out but also functions as normal clothes.
You could swipe a panel on your arm and switch a song or turn up the volume on your phone. These shortcuts would be used through the Bluetooth and Wifi.
Clothing Companies Are Also Joining In
The main part of smart clothes, is the clothing portion. A lot of big brands are partnering with other tech companies or making their own E-textiles.
Levi's, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Nike, Under Armor, and even Pizza Hut are adding wearable tech to their own companies.
One of those might not have seemed like the others, and yes you read it right. Pizza Hut made sneakers that can order a pizza and pause your TV. Just point and pause or press and order, both come from a button on the shoes.
As for the other brands they all have athletics socks, shirts, and other tech. Most are for fitness and measure a person's heart-rate, breathing rates, and also track your progress.
Some brands have a few different attributes but most are the same. Tommy Hilfiger is the only formidable outlier which tracks when you wear the clothes to rack up points for free promotions and gifts.
The Companies Dedicated To Just Smart Wear
Even though there are a lot of large companies that are makingvthe occasional wearable. There are also smaller tech companies which are dedicated to it.
The Unseen is a new company that has a color changing collection that is based on touch and the weather. It changes to blue in the summer and red in the spring. Your touch can also effect the color.
Companies like Hexoskin, Athos, Myontec, and Fitbit are companies that are popular in the world of smart fashion. The may not be the biggest but they're rising in the ranks.
Each company has their own store and their own products. All of them measure a body function like heart-rates and all of them are made to be used to better yourself.
Other companies such as Thesis Couture, Spiber, and XO have customs order based on inquiries. Instead of looking around a shopping page, you have to email them about an order.
These companies are newer and have to design the clothes from scratch each time. You have to order something in advance if you want any of these exclusive products.
It's a new age where companies are starting to realize the possibilities in the clothing world. We may see even more companies start to pop up and make the next big thing. We'll just have to wait and see.
Pricing... Is It Affordable?
Most of these companies aren't cheap to buy from. Most of the time you'll invest over $100 per item. However, not all the products are going to break your bank.
Accessories still do the same things as the other clothes, but they're usually cheaper. The most inexpensive item would be the Tommy Hilfiger hat at 29.99 or the Lumo Run sensor that can be placed anywhere at $79.00.
If you're looking for average prices, most of them will be around $150 to $300 depending on the company and what it does. Some even go into the $1000 range.
Smart clothing is still very recent technology that hasn't been perfected yet. A lot of the companies producing these are just getting started.
If you want more affordable smart attire then the best option is to wait. If not you can always think of it as buying new exercise equipment.
However, instead of just telling you how much you ran, you can monitor a lot more. If you're serious about a healthy and exercise-filled lifestyle then this might be a good investment.
Even if it's just a pair of cushion socks, a smart hat, a smart belt, or athletics socks you can still monitor your health. It doesn't matter if they're small they'll be just as beneficial as the larger items.
If you only exercise for fun or aren't that into it, then get a cheaper wrist watch or just a tracking app. Don't spend the extra money if you don't have it.
Should You Buy Wearable Technology?
This is a question which only you can answer. If you're interested and willing to wear it then go ahead. Most of these items are used for fitness and tracking certain body functions.
If you don't exercise often or already have a fitness tracker, you won't really need any of these smart outfits. However, there are other uses for the clothes.
Monitoring your body isn't a bad thing and some brands have different uses. Tommy Hilfiger gives you special deals, OMSignal helps with your emotional support, and Siren helps diabetics monitor their life.
If you're not interested then don't break the bank over a nice shirt. Give it some time and we may see more new and inexpensive brands coming out of the woodwork.
However, to you some of these might sound interesting, and in the end it's your money.
You can wear whatever you want as long as you have the money to buy it.
Keep and eye out for more E-textiles in the future and remember.
What's most important is your own happiness..
