These Rules Can Be Broken!
Wearing casual or athletic crew socks with sandals is something that a lot of people hate seeing.
People judge others by what they wear and how they present themselves. However, these generalized fashion rules are meant to be broken!
You should be able to wear whatever you want, whenever you want. You don't have to follow any basic fashion rules.
Rules On What Colors You're Supposed To Wear
Most people won't take patterns and colors into consideration when they dress themselves. However, in fashion there are a lot of rules that forbid certain styles from going together.
1. Don't Wear White After Labor Day
I never understood why you don't wear white after labor day. Most people will say that it's because white is meant to cool people down so you should only wear it in the summer.
Some historians believe that white was for the upper class so they tried to push their narrative onto the poorer population. However, it's 2018 which means you can wear what you want!
White is a pure shade that you can wear whenever you want! Even if you blend into a pile of snow or get cold you can wear it.
2. You Can't Mix Patterns
Two completely different patterns aren't meant to mix, at least that's what most people would say. It could look messy or like you just threw the two items together.
Who cares if you did? Wearing a brightly colored floral pattern with black and white stripes looks perfectly fine. Here's some fashion advice, as long as you're confident you can wear anything you set your mind to!
Even if it looks a little strange to others, if you like it wear it. If you don't want to go to crazy you can wear different patterns but with similar colors.
3. Can't Mix Two Colors Together?
There is a strange rule where you can't mix black and navy or black and brown. I don't know where these people learned about fashion but that's crazy!
A lot of the conflict is people think you picked the wrong shade and got blue while others really think brown and black don't go together. What do you think?
4. Horizontal Stripes Are A No Go
Horizontal stripes are supposed to make you look bigger so a lot of people stay away from them. Some people also think of old-timey prisoners from western movies.
However, horizontal stripes can be really cute it you match them with something else. A stripped skirt can go great with a regular black shirt. You can also mix and match colors to create your own style.
Be wary of the style over the pattern. loose-fitting shirts can either make you look comfortable or big so stray away from loose horizontal stripes. Or don't it's really your choice.
5. Bright Colors Are Blinding
This can be true with some colors but you don't have to listen to others! Neon colors can add a pop of color to your life and wardrobe.
They're especially great when you're walking and it's dark outside. Instead of getting hit by a bike or car you'll be seen from a mile away. Think of the positives rather than the negatives.
6. A Tie A Pocket Square Have To Match
Don't be confined to one accent piece. Turn all your accessories into fun and interesting items that will pop against a suit. A pocket square is open to anyone's opinion.
You don't have to get to crazy with patterns and extreme colors but complimentary colors work great. If not then go for all warm or all cool colors. Pick what you want to wear!
7. Can't Wear Metallic Items
Who says you can't wear a bright metal colored coat? Most people... However, that doesn't matter because it's not one of your opinions.
If you have a sick 80's jacket just sitting waiting to be worn, throw it on and go out on the town. Even if you're just hanging with friends it can be a fun item to wear!
8. Fake Fur And Leather Is Tacky?
If you want to support animals and live fur and leather free than be my guest. Most of the "fake" fabrics are just as good as the real materials.
They also cost a lot less than real leather and fur. If you want an inexpensive and cute alternative to animal-made materials then choose faux fabrics.
The Price Of Fashion Is Ridiculous!
9. Name Brands Are Expensive
Thinking that all name brands cost a fortune means you've been shopping all wrong! If you can afford the retail price of name brands then you are ahead of the game. Buying them when you can't means you're falling behind.
Even though brands are expensive there are always sales and promotions going on. There are also flash sites which sell name brands for super cheap.
You can also take the risk of getting it from secondhand shops but they could always be knockoffs. The best price is to buy name brand clothes when there is a huge sale going on. Wait, don't buy.
10. Cheap Clothes Are Low Quality
In some cases this is completely true, however, not everything falls apart in your hands. My wardrobe is basically full of clothes I bought from $20 or less and they all hold up really well.
I have a few expensive items and they feel the same to me. Some expensive clothing items are made to last like purses and coats, but shirts and jeans can be bought from anywhere.
11. Expensive Clothes Last Longer
This can also be true in most cases. However if you take care of your clothes, anything can last forever. There are so many ways to make your clothes last longer and sometime all it is, is your washing techniques.
If you have an item that you feel is wearing out quickly, check the tag on it. It will have a symbol that shows what it's approved washing and drying method is.
There are other ways to make them last longer like hanging them correctly, mending them, and redyeing them. Choose a method and see where it takes you.
Shoes And Accessories Aren't Important
12. You Can't Wear Athletic Crew Socks With Sandals.
Personally, I think this is a solid rule in most cases but what do I know. I actually think really sheer and lace socks look fine with sandals and heels, just the thick ones look weird.
If you want to wear your athletic crew socks with sandals then go ahead, it's your choice. Even if I don't agree with it, it's not my decision to make.
13. Can't Mix Your Metals
Everyone always says silver and gold, but in fashion apparently they shouldn't mix. Some say it looks strange, while others just have the preference.
Silver and Gold can be worn with just about anything since they're not really colors, they're more accent pieces. Accessories are made to be worn, even if they don't "match".
14. Your Shoes, Bag, and Belt Should Match
This can't be more untrue since I have never followed this rule in my life. Who has a bag for every shoe and a belt for every bag?
I may have a lot of shoes but I only have two bags and they are black. It's good to match but you don't need to go crazy.
Don't center your world around what matches when there are so many interesting combinations that can be made. It's easy to break rules when you look cute doing it!
15. Sunglasses Are Only For The Summer
Whoever said this lives somewhere that's above 50 degrees Fahrenheit at all times. If you've never seen snow just know that it can be blinding!
Even days where there's overcast the sun can still be blaring and cause the clouds become a white beacon. Sometimes sunglasses are needed even when it's not 100 degrees outside.
16. Certain Shoes Are For Certain Occasions
Some people think you can only wear heels for fancy and professional events and flats for casual ones. However, that is not the case for every event.
Heels can be worn at any time and for any event. They can look really good with a nice pair of jeans and cute yet casual jacket.
Flats are also really nice to wear with a simple dress or pantsuit. If you pair the design and colors correctly you can get a nice outfit going.
Running shoes are also made for exercise but a lot of people wear them as casual daily shoes. As long as they function as a shoe, you should be able to wear them wherever.
17. Scarves Are For The Winter
Scarves can be for the winter exclusively if it's a thicker material. If the fabric is light and thin it can be used in any weather. Even during hot days in the summer and spring a scarf can pair nicely.
I wouldn't wear one in over 90 degree weather unless you're determined to. However, on really warm days a scarf would look good with a t-shirt and skirt.
18. Don't Wear Square-Toed Shoes
People have preferences and a lot of people don't like square-toed shoes. Many see them as a fashion menace yet a lot of men wear them.
Most think of it as a bulky, geometric, and lazy look. For some reason everyone has banded together to try to get the square-toed shoes off the market. It may look weird as a shoe, but it still functions as one and can be considered a good style if you like it, so it's not so bad.
19. One Piece Of Jewelry Per Limb
Decorating your entire body in metals is to gaudy, is what many people say. They suggest one piece of jewelry per limb which means a ring per hand, one bracelet per arm, one earring per ear, and so on.
A lot of people are interested in piercings and jewelry and like to show off all they have. I personally wear rings, earrings, and a necklace or two on a daily basis.
If you like to wear a lot of jewelry on your body then go ahead. It doesn't matter what colors you choose, as long as you like what you're wearing!
20. Leather Is For Riding Motorcycles
People relate leather to criminals and those who have no morals, when in reality it's just a fabric. Many people wear it as a casual jacket and they look good doing it.
Leather is made to be worn in mild climates but it can be worn in the summer and winter. You can always wear tank tops and sweatshirts under jackets so wear it when you want.
21. Long Skirts And Dresses Make You Look Short
This is a weird rule, since they say that people who are short can't wear maxi dresses and floor-length skirts. Others imply that you'll look shorter if you happen to wear one of these items.
It all depends on the shape of the skirt and your body type. Tighter and looser skirts go with different body types when it comes to height. However, whatever you feel comfortable and confident in you should wear.
22. Heels Are Banned For Tall People
Sometimes heels are a hassle and can be in certain situations, especially in female fashion. Once you reach a certain height it shouldn't matter if you wear heels. People will already comment on your height from the start.
Whether your tall or short it doesn't matter. If you want to be 7 feet tall in heels then go for it, no one can stop you from doing what you want!
23. Pajamas Are For Sleeping
Personally I like to put on casual clothes when I go outside or somewhere with a lot of people. However, when you have something on right, you can go anywhere.
A pajama shirt can be used as a button up or undershirt when you're wearing a jacket or sweatshirt. Pajama pants are just comfy as can be worn anywhere depending on the style.
If the pants are blue with a yellow duck pattern, you might want to only go out when your going to be in your car. Yet, if you don't care what people think, let those weird patterns out!
24. Overalls Are For Farms
Overalls are back in fashion and a lot of people are starting to put these on again. They are not for professional setting but you can easily go somewhere casual.
learn to dress your way, If you pick the correct undershirt and shoes it could look really cute! Don't let others think for you, put it on and strut your stuff!
25. High-Waisted Pants Are A Waste
I am an avid lover of high-waisted pants. Mainly because crop tops are also in fashion and I like to have pants that reach where the shirt ends. I also love how secure and comfortable both the jeans and leggings are.
Some hate the feeling of it which is understandable in most cases. Wearing these depends on what you wear, how you feel, and how confident you are.
Rules On How To Dress Properly
26. Dress Your Age
As you get older others will say that you have to dress "appropriately" since your older, a parent, or a professional in something. During most work situations you should dress how you're supposed to or how it is enforced.
However, once your out you can show whatever is within the laws of your state or country. As long as your not doing anything illegal, if you got it flaunt it. Who cares if there are family rules which dictate what you wear, break them!
27. You Can't Wear Sweatpants or Leggings As Pants
I have never followed this rule since it makes no sense. Leggings and sweatpants are so comfortable and put with the right shirt and shoes can look professional.
You may need to wear longer shirts if they're thin but it's worth it. It means you get to sit in your pajamas while still looking like you put effort into your wardrobe that morning!
28. Clothes Have To Be Fitted To Your Body Type
Loose clothes are the epitome of comfort. When you buy clothes that are to big they just turn into your comfort clothes which just makes them better.
If you buy clothes that are smaller than you size then good for you. Learning how to dress cool means you'll need confidence to own your body type.
29. Only Wear Your Genders Clothes
Have you even worn your significant others clothes, or maybe your friends clothes. Clothes that aren't meant for your gender but you decide to put them on anyways.
Somehow things that are supposed to be for you, look better on you. Girls clothing normally has better and cuter shirts, but coats made for guys look and feel way better.
I don't know how much fabric they think some people need but for girls it's always to thin! When it's winter look in the men's section because some of the coats are nice!
30. Sequins Are Meant For Special Occasions
Sequins are very weird to me, but they are also really interesting. With the right shirt or bottoms a sequin clothing item could look cool.
Adding the right things can make anything look casual and normal or on the opposite end it can look high-fashion.
If you're going for the sequin look try to add a fun shirt that has similar colors. A sequin top and a pair of jeans instantly turns the outfit to casual and cool!
31. Denim On Denim Is Old School
This can be the case in a few instances where everything including your shoes is denim. Yet a simple denim jacket and jeans can look pretty cool.
A denim shirt and jeans might be a bit over the top but it can be better with a few patches or if the colors are different. Fashion sense is just a phrase so create your own with your style!
32. Tuck In Your Shirts!
When you're in a professional environment then it is highly suggested you wear your dress shirt tucked in. On the opposite side a lot of people will make fun of others who tuck in their casual shirts.
Some may say it's weird but you can always make a look work. Add a nice jacket or some accessories and it could look good. Don't go Steve Urkel on us, unless that's your style in which case that's awesome, some people can pull it off.
33. Don't Wear Eccentric Ties or Accessories
Even in a professional setting (in most cases) wearing a fun tie or scarf is completely fine. When you're in a meeting I would go against it, but a casual work day should be fine.
If you're feeling a little shy then wear some crazy athletic crew socks or a weird bracelet. Most won't see it and you can express yourself in small ways.
Rules Don't Always Apply
Rules are meant to be broken, especially in fashion. If you are really a fashion connoisseur you'll know that fashion shows are weird and no one listen to any of these rules.
Casual street fashion is where all the rules start stacking up against you. However, you should make your own rules and wear whatever you want. This blog is about being your own fashion guru, and not taking others criticisms.
Fashion is meant to be fun so start expressing yourself through what you wear. Don'l let others judge you by what you wear, show them the real you and have fun.
Wear those Crocs, put on pajamas, match gold and silver, and just do what you want to do. No one is stopping you so take your outfits into your hands and live a little. Even if it's just a little!
